FELDENKRAIS & IMPROVISATION
FeldenQi
2 Part Intensive:  Wed/Thurs, 9/17-18, 2-4:30pm
Feldenkrais and Improvisation:  Moving with the whole self
Wednesday, September 17, 2-4:30pm Highways:
In this workshop, participants will experience a Feldenkrais Awareness Through
Movement (ATM) lesson and it’s application to improvisation and performance.  In an
awareness for movement lesson, we focus our attention on the process and the quality
of our movement as much as on the act of moving itself.  Moshe Feldenkrais said that
to do what we want we must first know what we are doing.   By coming to recognize and
understand the habitual patterns of body behavior we can accept who we are, find more
choices for acting and moving on this planet and allow new possibilities to take shape
and manifest.  We become more available to ourselves and to our capacity to move with
spontaneous expression.  In this vein we will improvise with characters as they emerge
out of our movement explorations.  We will engage in a moving and sounding dialogue
drawn from this deeper sense of our whole selves.

Gillian McGinty and Friend

emergency, but we hope to see her another year at the Festival...
Edward Yu is a Certified Feldenkrais Practitionersm, former runner and triathlete, and founder of
FeldenQi Running and FeldenQi Fitness. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Penn
State University, he worked in Japan as an English and Chinese teacher. In 1996, he moved to China to
study Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taichi, Bagua and martial arts. His interest in how people learn
through movement has led him to bring disparate fields such as Taichi, martial arts, dance, kinesiology,
Feldenkrais psychology and cognitive science into his teaching.
The impetus for FeldenQi came years after he quit running and doing triathlons and discovered that
trying harder doesn’t always work so well to make you a better athlete, though it can work very well
to make you extremely tired, discouraged and neurotic.
Edward has studied authentic movement and contact improvisation with Stefanie Cohen and Mark
Koenig; Continuum with Robin Becker and Impro Theatresports with Lorne Greene.
These days you can find him trying to roust up groups of people to play with breakdancing,
storytelling and dance-martial arts collaborations.
